Pirates Injury Update: Andrew McCutchen, Gerrit Cole

By on 8/08/2014 08:00:00 PM

The Pittsburgh Pirates are willing to wait a few more days before making a decision on center fielder Andrew McCutchen, reports Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. Biertempfel adds that starting pitcher Gerrit Cole will make a rehab appearance with Triple-A Indianapolis on Sunday:

McCutchen left Pittsburgh’s game on Sunday with an avulsion fracture in a rib in his left side. He’s been able to swing a bat and is trying to heal quickly to avoid a trip to the disabled list.

The defending National League MVP is putting together another outstanding season for the Pirates. McCutchen is batting .311/.411/.536 and has posted 4.6 WAR so far in 2014.

Cole has been dealing with lat soreness for the past couple of months, keeping him out of action since July 5. He’s made two rehab starts with Indianapolis so far, allowing five runs in his latest one.

The 23-year-old is off to a great start in his young career, but a lat injury is always concerning. Cole has a 3.78 ERA (3.76 FIP) with 78 strikeouts in 14 starts this season.

Getting both Cole and McCutchen back would be a huge boost for the Pirates, who trail the Milwaukee Brewers by a game and a half in the NL Central.
