Pirates Injury Update: Charlie Morton to DL

By on 8/18/2014 07:00:00 AM

The Pittsburgh Pirates have placed starting pitcher Charlie Morton on the 15-day disabled list.
Beat writer Rob Biertempfel reported that not only is it peculiar considering that Morton said he felt healthy after his last start, but also because star pitcher Gerrit Cole is set to return on Wednesday.

Although he is not a big named pitcher, Morton has put up solid numbers when in the middle of the Pirates rotation. Over the past two seasons, while he has sometimes struggled with command, Morton has kept his ERA under four in almost 275 innings pitched.

He is in the first year of a three year contract extension with the Pirates, with a club option for 2017.  While the rotation may be filled when he returns, he should remain a big part of the Pirates' future staffs.

This season Morton has gone 5-12 with a 3.84 ERA in 25 starts.  In seven years with the Pirates he is 31-53 with a 4.53 ERA.
