Pirates Injury Update: Neil Walker back in lineup

By on 8/15/2014 04:30:00 PM

Pittsburgh Pirates second baseman Neil Walker is back in the lineup Friday against the Washington Nationals and batting fourth, reports Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Walker has started just twice in the past two weeks due to lower back stiffness. He managed to avoid a trip to the disabled list, with Michael Martinez and Jayson Nix starting at second base in Walker’s absence.

The 28-year-old is having another solid season with the Pirates. Walker has hit .277/.347//.456 with 16 home runs in 97 games this year.

Pittsburgh will welcome back Walker to the lineup, as it is shorthanded at the moment. Outfielder and defending NL MVP Andrew McCutchen is on the disables list with a fractured rib, while shortstop Jordy
Mercer was removed Thursday with right forearm tightness.

The Pirates are currently 2.5 games back of the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central, but hold the second Wild Card spot.
