Pirates Injury Update: Pedro Alvarez exits with foot sprain

By on 8/27/2014 11:00:00 AM

The Pittsburgh Pirates improved to 68-64 on the season following a 5-2 win over the St. Louis Cardinals last night. With the win the Pirates are five games out in the division and a game and a half back in the wild card race. There is a bit of concern moving forward, as Pedro Alvarez left the game with a foot sprain after going 0-for-3 with a strikeout.

Rob Biertempfel, who covers the Pirates for the Pittsburgh Tribune, tweeted the following last night on Alvarez.
Biertempfel offered an update this morning on the status of Alvarez.
Gaby Sanchez came in to replace Alvarez and went 1-for-1 with a run scored. Expect Sanchez to start in the absence of Alvarez.

Alvarez, in his 5th Major League season, is batting .232 with 18 home runs and 56 RBI this season. He's coming off back-to-back 30-plus home run seasons and is a career .235 hitter with 104 home runs and 324 RBI.
