Pirates Injury Update: Starling Marte, Gerrit Cole

By on 8/02/2014 01:45:00 PM

Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Starling Marte will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Indianapolis on Saturday, according to Rob Biertempfel of The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. Biertempfel also reports that pitcher Gerrit Cole has been scratched from his rehab start scheduled for Saturday with Indianapolis:

Marte took a pitch to the helmet on July 18 and was placed on the disabled list five days later with concussion-like symptoms. Manager Clint Hurdle said Marte will get about 20 at-bats in Triple-A, meaning he could rejoin the Pirates as early as Wednesday.

The 25-year-old is a bit down from his outstanding 2013 campaign, batting .255/.328/.385 on the season. Marte has still been worth 1.8 WAR for the Pirates this season.

Pittsburgh will have to do some shuffling in the outfield, as All-Star utility man Josh Harrison and Travis Snider have been getting Marte’s starts in left field.

Cole has been on the disabled list since July 5 with right lat soreness, his second injury stint this season. It’s unclear why exactly Cole was scratched from his Saturday rehab appearance, but general manger Neal Huntington said Cole would throw an extra bullpen session this week to “refine some things.”

The Pirates are going to be cautious with the 23-year-old Cole, who has posted a 3.46 ERA (3.27 FIP) in the first 33 starts of his promising career.

It’s not yet clear who Cole will replace in the Pirates rotation when he is activated.
