Raiders Injury Update: Team says Schaub will start week 1 despite injury

By on 8/26/2014 10:30:00 AM

Oakland Raiders quarterback Matt Schaub will in fact start for the team Week 1 despite an elbow injury, Jerry McDonald of the Oakland Tribune reported via Twitter.

Schaub has been battling elbow tendinitis for the last few weeks, but that is not enough to dissuade Raiders head coach Dennis Allen from starting him Week 1. Allen said the team would keep an eye on it's apparent starting quarterback.

"Schaub's got a little soreness in his elbow. He came in yesterday afternoon with soreness in his elbow, so we gave him the day off," Allen said. "We'll evaluate over the next couple days and see how he's doing."

Schaub first mentioned the injury to team officials after Friday's preseason loss to Green Bay.'s Ian Rapoport reported via Twitter Schaub's elbow has no structural issues.

Schaub has had little to no zip on medium-deep passes, forcing the raiders to rely on shorter passes, dump offs to the running backs, or screens.

Despite having two younger players, Derek Carr and Matt McGloin behind Schaub, Allen seems to think sticking with the injured veteran is a good idea. Time will tell if he continues to believe this, especially if Schaub's arm does not improve as hoped.
