Rams Injury Update: Sam Bradford and Jake Long out for preseason opener

By on 8/07/2014 07:00:00 AM

Just announced yesterday by head coach Jeff Fisher, St. Louis Rams QB Sam Bradford and LT Jake Long will not be suiting up for the Rams first pre-season game this Friday night against the New Orleans Saints.
News about Bradford’s condition came from ESPN Nation writer Nick Wagoner via twitter.
That tweet came just minutes after a tweet released by the St. Louis Rams’ official twitter account announcing Long’s status for Friday’s game.
Both Bradford and Long suffered torn ACLs during the 2013 season (Bradford week seven, Long week 16) and have been recovering at their own paces, Bradford better than Long at this point.

In the grand scheme of the offense, coach Jeff Fisher is pleased with Bradford’s progress. In an interview with, Fisher stated, “He’s done everything we needed to see right now at practice, so he’s going to play in the preseason, unlikely that he’s going to play this week. But he’ll get plenty of snaps with the starters because he needs to, he needs to get out there and work with Scott and the rest of the guys. But it’s not because he can’t, it’s because it’s our choice; as I have said before I’m really pleased with where he is and what he’s doing.”

During his career Bradford has been impressive at times, and disappointing at others. During his four-year career Bradford has averaged over 225 yards per game along with 59 career passing touchdowns. At the same time though, Bradford has thrown 38 career interceptions and has fumbled the football a total of 27 times.

2014 could be a make or break season for Bradford and the Rams. QBs Shaun Hill, Austin Davis and Garrett Gilbert will take Bradford’s spot in the offense during Friday night's game.

Although Bradford’s job isn’t in jeopardy right now, this game could have future back-up implications as the pre-season rolls on.

As for OT Jake Long, the recovery from knee surgery has been relatively smooth.

According to Bleacher Report, Long stated, "I'm feeling great. Every day I am progressing and feeling better. I finally got some live reps today and it felt great. I'm really happy with how the first day of live stuff went."

In his seventh NFL season, Long has seen success, going to four Pro Bowls with the Miami Dolphins.

Hopefully with Long and Bradford playing at elite levels, the Rams can turn their 2014 fortunes around and win some games.
