Rangers Injury Update: Nick Tepesch, Derek Holland

By on 8/05/2014 08:45:00 PM

Texas Rangers starting pitcher Derek Holland struggled in his second rehab start in an attempt to return from offseason knee surgery, per T.R. Sullivan of Sullivan also reports that pitcher Nick Tepesch will make his scheduled start on Wednesday after missing his last turn in the rotation with a knee problem:

Holland had microfracture surgery to repair torn cartilage in his left knee in January. He allowed four runs, four hits and a walk in just one inning on Monday pitching for Triple-A Round Rock, throwing 42 pitches.

The 27-year-old figured to be a big part of Texas’ rotation after Yu Darvish. Holland posted a solid 3.42 ERA (3.44) FIP in 33 starts a year ago.

Tepesch left his start on July 26 after six innings with a sore left knee, forcing him to be pushed back. He threw two bullpen sessions last weekend and will start Wednesday against the Chicago White Sox.

After being called up in mid-May, Tepesch has posted a 4.84 ERA (5.33 FIP) in 12 starts.

The Rangers have had a disastrous 2014 campaign due to numerous injuries. Texas has used 13 different starting pitchers this year, in addition to losing Holland before the season.
