Rays Injury Update: Tim Beckham activated, optioned

By on 8/10/2014 03:45:00 PM

The Tampa Bay Rays have activated infielder Tim Beckham from the 60-day disabled list and optioned him to Triple-A Durham, reports Marc Topkin of The Tampa Bay Times:

Beckham has missed the entire 2014 season after tearing his right ACL during an offseason workout last December. He began a rehab assignment for the rookie-level Gulf Coast League on July 22 before being moved to High-A Charlotte, collecting 13 hits in 10 games between the two levels.

The former first overall pick in the 2008 draft has never lived up to his potential, but the Rays aren’t ready to give up on Beckham yet.  Beckham appeared briefly in the major leagues last September, picking up three singles in eight plate appearances.

Tampa Bay is 5.5 games out of the AL Wild Card Race, so it’s very possible Beckham will see time in the big leagues again when the rosters expand in September.
