Red Sox Injury Update: David Ortiz exits after HBP

By on 8/23/2014 05:30:00 PM

On a day when the Boston Red Sox lost their seventh straight, designated hitter David Ortiz had to exit early.  He left after being drilled on the elbow in the sixth inning on a Charlie Furbush offering.
While the severity was not known initially, Ortiz was unable to bat in his lineup spot in the eighth inning.  Greg Johns of is reporting that Oritz left the game with a bruised right elbow.
Currently the league leader in RBIs, Ortiz has been the central figure in the Sox lineup and a force in the American League for the past decade.  This season the 37 year-old  not only has 93 RBIs, but he also has 30 home runs, and a .266 batting average.

With their title defense not going as planned, this would not be the worst time for the club to lose Ortiz.  They have gone from first to worst in the American League East and are 16 games under the .500 mark.
