Red Sox Injury Update: David Ortiz sits with elbow and foot problems

By on 8/25/2014 04:30:00 PM

Red Sox (56-74) designated hitter David Ortiz will be out of the Red Sox lineup today with injuries to his left elbow and his right foot.  The DH left the game after he was hit by a pitch on the elbow in the sixth inning of Saturday’s loss to the Seattle Mariners.  He was back in the lineup Sunday only to leave the game in the fourth inning.

On Saturday, Sports Injury Alert’s Pete Schwichtenberg reported Ortiz left the game with a bruised left elbow after getting hit by Mariners reliever Charlie Furbush.  Despite the bruise, Ortiz was able to start in Sunday’s game but had to leave after favoring his right foot while running in the fourth inning, according to Rob Bradford and Alex Speier of

The 38 year old Ortiz has played in 123 games this season for the Red Sox with a .265 batting average.  He has 30 home runs and 93 RBIs, second only to White Sox first baseman Jose Abreu (94).  Ortiz has been a consistent presence in the lineup of a team that is struggling.  The Red Sox are in 5th place in the AL East after winning the World Series last year.  The Red Sox hope to break an eight game losing streak when they begin a series against the Toronto Blue Jays tonight.
