Red Sox Injury Update: Kelly Johnson activated

By on 8/07/2014 04:45:00 PM

The Boston Red Sox activated infielder Kelly Johnson from the 15-day disabled list on Thursday and optioned rookie outfielder Mookie Betts to Triple-A, reports Maureen Mullen of MLB.com:

Johnson has been out with a strained left groin since July 23, when he was a member of the New York Yankees. Boston acquired Johnson at the trade deadline in a rare deal with New York in exchange for shortstop Stephen Drew.

The 32-year-old struggled in New York, batting .219/.304/.373, good for 0.6 WAR. Will Middlebrooks was also recently activated and will likely start often at third base, meaning Johnson will be used as a bench piece or possibly in the outfield.

Johnson is a free agent after the season and probably won’t figure prominently into Boston’s long-term plans. Trading Drew does allow rookie Xander Boegarts to move over to shortstop, where he is much more valuable.
