Red Sox Injury Update: Xander Bogaerts placed on concussion list

By on 8/25/2014 11:15:00 AM

The Boston Red Sox head into Monday's game against the Toronto Blue Jays with a record of 56-74, last in the American League Central. Last year's World Series champions have had a nightmarish season and are ranked 26th in runs scored and 22nd in staff ERA. On the injury front, shortstop Xander Bogaerts, who was hit in the head by a pitch on Friday, was placed on the concussion disabled list. Expect Brock Holt to get most of the time at shortstop in Bogaerts' absence.

Bogaerts was hit in the head by a Felix Hernandez pitch on August 22.  Although he's feeling better, Bogaerts will not travel with the team to Toronto this week.
"It's been getting better. I feel good, but I think it's just something to be safe, to make sure I'm fully healthy when I come back. I've never been on the DL at all. It will be a long five days without playing baseball, I guess."
Joe McDonald, who covers the Red Sox for, tweeted the following, confirming Bogaerts' status.
Bogaerts, in his first full Major League season, is batting .223 with eight home runs and 30 RBI. In 18 games last season, he hit .250 with a homer and five RBI. Bogaerts is a career .225 hitter with nine home runs and 35 RBI.
