Royals Injury Update: Omar Infante out with sore shoulder

Royals second baseman Omar Infante will not be available for the third straight game as the AL Central leaders attempt to sweep the Minnesota Twins and extend their four-game winning streak. Manager Ned Yost said Infante has been dealing with an inflammed shoulder for "two or three weeks," according to Dick Kaegel of

Infante, 32, had started every one of the Royals' 130 games before this injury, posting a line of .255/.292/.353 (OPS+ 78) with six homers and 59 RBI. Although his offense is subpar, he has provided above average defensive and baserunning skills, according to Fangraphs. Infante's replacement at second base is rookie Christian Colon.

Infante was signed by the Detroit Tigers in 1999 out of Venezuela, made his debut September 7, 2002 at age 20, and posted a batting line of.266/.305/.399 in two stints with the Tigers (2002-2007 and 2012-13).

In November 2007 theTigers traded him to the Chicago Cubs for Jacque Jones; the Cubs then flipped him (with Will Ohman) to the Atlanta Braves for Jose Ascanio. In November 2010,  Atlanta traded him with Mike Dunn to the Florida Marlins for Dan Uggla. The Miami Marlins traded him in July 2012 with Anibal Sanchez back to the Tigers in exchange for Rob Brantly, Brian Flynn and Jacob Turner. Infante, who also plays shortstop and third base, has a career line of .277/.316/.398 over 13 seasons  In 2010, when he was with the Atlanta Braves and hit .321/.359/.416, he was named to the NL All-Star team. 

After the 2013 season, as a free agent, Infante signed a 4 year, $30 million contract with the Royals that takes him through 2017 with a team option for 2018.
