By on 8/13/2014 12:30:00 PM

The Kansas City Royals got pounded last night by the Oakland A's, losing 11-3. The loss dropped the Royals to 65-54, a half of game ahead of the Detroit Tigers in the American League Central. The Royals are in the middle of the pack in runs scored, ranked 15th in the league and 11th in team ERA, but the pitching staff suffered a loss when reliever Scott Downs was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a stiff neck.

As reported by The Kansas City Star,  the Royals have placed Downs on the 15-day disabled list with a stiff neck. Josh Willingham, who was acquired in a trade with the Minnesota Twins on Monday, was activated to take the roster spot of Downs.

Downs was picked up as a free agent on July 6 and pitched well in 12 appearances with the Royals, going 0-1 with a 3.48 ERA.  Downs struggled all season with the White Sox, going 0-2 with a 6.08 ERA in 38 games.

Downs, in his 13th Major League season, is 0-3 with a 5.29 ERA this season.  The veteran has pitched for the Cubs, Nationals (Montreal Expos at the time), Blue Jays, Angels, Braves, White Sox and Royals and has a career record 38-39 with 27 saves and an ERA of 3.56.
