By on 8/29/2014 11:00:00 AM

The Kansas City Royals fell to 74-59 on the season following an 11-5 loss to the Minnesota Twins on Thursday. Bruce Chen allowed six runs on five hits with two walks in the top of the 10th to absorb the loss. On the injury front, the Royals have activated pitcher Scott Downs and placed Michael Mariot on the 60-day disabled list..

I reported on August 13 that Downs was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a stiff neck. An update on Downs, as reported by Dick Kaegel of, is that he's been activated from the disabled list and the Royals optioned Liam Hendriks to Double-A Northern Arkansas.

Downs, in his 13th Major League season, is 0-3 with a 5.29 ERA this season.  The veteran has pitched for the Cubs, Nationals (Montreal Expos at the time), Blue Jays, Angels, Braves, White Sox and Royals and has a career record 38-39 with 27 saves and an ERA of 3.56.

In other injury news, pitcher Michael Mariot was placed on the 60-day DL to make room on the 40-man roster for recently acquired Jayson Nix, who is expected to join the Royals on Saturday.

Mariot, in his first Major League season, is 1-0 with a 6.48 ERA. In 25 innings, he's allowed 31 hits and 12 walks, while striking out 21.
