Steelers Injury Update: Ryan Shazier out with knee injury

By on 8/10/2014 09:06:00 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Ryan Shazier sat out the team's preseason opener against the New York Giants with a knee injury.  Josh Alper at Profootballtalk reports the move was made as a precaution.

Shazier was the 15th overall pick in this year's draft and the undisputed leader of an Ohio State defense that ranked seventh nationally against the run. He led the Big 10 in tackles last season with 143.

His play during training camp is drawing raves from teammates and coaches for his speed and athleticism. In fact, he's slated to become the first rookie to start in Dick LeBeau's defense since Kendrell Bell in 2001.

Shazier's absence opened the door for fellow linebacker Sean Spence to get some playing time last night against the Giants. Spence is back playing after suffering a knee injury last season.
