Tigers Injury Update: Andy Dirks leaves rehab

By on 8/06/2014 08:00:00 AM

The Detroit Tigers won in 12 inning over the New York Yankees on Tuesday by the score of 4-3. The win improved the first place Tigers to 62-48, five games ahead of the Kansas City Royals in the American League Central. At fifth in the Major Leagues in runs scored, the Tigers were looking for an additional offensive boost with the eventual return of Andy Dirks. They'll have to wait even longer than expected, as Dirks left his latest rehab start with a hamstring injury.

Our own Darius Austin reported on August 2 that Dirks started a rehab assignment and went 1-for-3 in five innings of play.  He was expected to remain with the West Michigan Whitecaps until Wednesday.

An update on Dirks, as reported by Chris Iott of, Dirks left Tuesday's game in the fourth inning after feeling his left hamstring tighten as he ran after a fly ball. He will be re-evaluated today.

It's been a tough season for Dirks, who had back surgery in March and was initially expected to play in early June. He just recently started a second rehab stint and now the latest issue will set him back even further.

Dirks, in his third Major League season, is batting .256 with nine home runs and 37 RBI this season. Last season, he batted .322 with eight home runs and 35 RBI in 88 games. In 297 career games, Dirks is batting .276 with 24 home runs and 100 RBI
