By on 8/01/2014 06:00:00 AM

The Detroit Tigers lost to the Chicago White Sox on Thursday by the score of 7-4. Even with the loss, the Tigers to 58-47 on the season, four and a half games ahead of the Kansas City Royals in the American League Central. At 22nd in team ERA, the Tigers are remaining on top largely due to an offense that is fifth in the Major Leagues in runs scored. One player who may further strengthen the offense is outfielder Andy Dirks, who has missed the entire season following back surgery. He is expected to restart his rehab today.

Our own Raymond Bureau reported on Wednesday that Dirks, who had back surgery on March 10 to remove fragmented pieces of disc, began baseball activities but there was no specific date to begin a rehab assignment.

Tom Gage, who covers the Tigers for the Detroit News, tweeted the following update on Dirks' status.
Dirks, in his third Major League season, is batting .256 with nine home runs and 37 RBI this season. Last season, he batted .322 with eight home runs and 35 RBI in 88 games. In 297 career games, Dirks is batting .276 with 24 home runs and 100 RBI.
