Tigers Injury Update: Justin Verlander, Andy Dirks

By on 8/16/2014 06:21:00 PM

The Tigers received good news on Justin Verlander on Friday. After leaving a game on Monday, in which he allowed five runs in the first inning, a second opinion confirmed that it was nothing more than shoulder inflammation. No structural damage.

Verlander, 31, is having a down year so far in 2014. In a rotation that includes Max Scherzer, David Price, and Anibal Sanchez, and Rick Porcello, Justin seems to be the weakest piece. Verlander has pitched to a 10-11 record, recording a ERA of 4.76 and a WHIP of 1.42. However, if he can return from injury, and pitch like his former self, he can be a huge piece for the playoff run.

Left fielder Andy Dirks also received good news. Dirks is set to begin a rehab assignment on Saturday in Toledo, the Triple-A affiliate of the Tigers.

Dirks, 28, hasn't played yet this year for Detroit, but there is a chance he can return to the Tigers for the stretch run, as they try to catch up to the Royals, who have a 1.5 game lead in the division.

The Tigers would love to get back both Dirks and Verlander in time for September, as they wrap up the season and hope to win the division.
