In recent weeks, the Detroit Tigers have given up their lead in the American League Central and they could certainly do without the current injury concerns with two of their most prominent players, Miguel Cabrera and Justin Verlander.
In the field, Cabrera tweaked his ankle during a slide in Wednesday night's game and left in the ninth inning. James Schmehl is reporting that manager Brad Ausmus said, 'generally speaking, Cabrera is fine.'
He will be used as a designated hitter as a precaution if the ankle is hurting, but he is not expected to miss any time.
On the mound, Verlander is expected to return on Saturday after throwing a 35 pitch bullpen.
Trailing by a game and a half in the division, and clinging to a slim wild card lead, Verlander's presence is vital to the team's chances for October baseball.

Looks like it's a go for Verlander on Saturday. Threw a 35-pitch bullpen today, and then walked into Ausmus' office to deliver a high five.

While Verlander currently leads the league in earned runs and has not been the same pitcher that he has been in years past, he has plenty of postseason experience. Last season, while many viewed his regular season as a down year, he excelled in the postseason allowing just one run over 23 playoff innings.Trailing by a game and a half in the division, and clinging to a slim wild card lead, Verlander's presence is vital to the team's chances for October baseball.
