Tigers Injury Update: Miguel Cabrera gets day off with ankle soreness

By on 8/24/2014 02:30:00 PM

The Tigers will rest the reigning AL MVP Miguel Cabrera on Sunday vs the Twins. Manager Brad Ausmus wanted to wait to see how Cabrera was doing today before posting the line up card, according to Chris Iott of MLive.com.

Cabrera had aggravated his ankle Saturday night, which has been bothering him for a while now. Sitting Cabrera today allows him to have two days rest before the Tigers start a three game set at home, against the Yankees.

Cabrera is in the midst of a down year for his standards, however he's still having a pretty good year. He's hitting .311/.378/.507 with 17 HRs and 87 RBIs, which are all lower than his last two seasons.

The Tigers can't afford to lose Cabrera for a long period of time, as they are competing for the AL Central top spot. They currently stand three games behind the Royals in the division, and they are tied for the second wild card spot.
