Vikings Injury Update: Adrian Peterson a healthy scratch from preseason opener

By on 8/06/2014 11:30:00 AM

Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson has little to prove at this point in his career, and exposing him to any sort of injury risk during the preseason is not worth it. After joking he would see "10-15 carries" in Friday night's game against the Oakland Raiders, it has been confirmed that Peterson won't play in Minnesota's preseason opener.

Peterson did start one preseason game last year, but he has not gotten a carry during the preseason since 2011. Head coach Mike Zimmer has already said he does not need to see Peterson perform during the preseason, and there's a chance he will be held out of action completely until Week 1, but with a new offensive system in place it may be beneficial for Peterson to see some action in the "dress rehearsal" third game.

Peterson's absence will allow the battle for the No. 2 spot on the depth chart to take center stage on Friday night, with Matt Asiata and rookie Jerick McKinnon in line for significant action.
