Vikings Injury Update: Phil Loadholt undergoes MRI

By on 8/25/2014 07:45:00 AM

The Minnesota Vikings stayed perfect on the preseason with a 30-12 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday night, but after the game an injury to one of their starting offensive lineman remained a bit of a concern. Right tackle Phil Loadholt briefly left the game with a lower leg injury, and even though he was able to return to the game after missing just one series he still underwent an MRI on Sunday as a precaution. The Minneapolis Star Tribune reported later on Sunday that Loadholt's MRI showed an ankle contusion, but no sprain was found.

During Loadholt's brief absence on Saturday night, rookie Austin Wentworth replaced him at right tackle and allowed a strip sack of quarterback Matt Cassel that resulted in a safety. In the grand scheme of things it was only one mistake in a preseason game from a player that may not even make the team, but the negative result also showed how important Loadholt is to Minnesota's offensive line.

Loadholt will almost surely join the rest of the Vikings' starters on the sideline for Thursday night's preseason finale against the Tennessee Titans. There does not appear to be any doubt about his status for Week 1 against the St. Louis Rams, but further updates may come between now and then.
