White Sox Injury Update: Avisail Garcia activated, Moises Sierra to DL

By on 8/17/2014 11:00:00 AM

The Chicago White Sox lost to the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday by the score of 6-3, to fall to 58-65 on the season. At nine and a half games out in the American League West and nine games out of a wild card spot, the White Sox need to make a run to have any chance of getting back into the race. A spark may be provided with the return of outfielder Avisail Garcia, who has been activated from the disabled list. In a corresponding move, Moises Sierra has been placed on the disabled list.

Our own Darius Austin reported on August 5 that Garcia was progressing much quicker than expected in his recovery from a torn labrum. After previously looking like he'd miss the entire season, he was on track to return with several weeks remaining in the season.

Daryl Van Schouwen, who covers the White Sox for the Chicago Sun-Times, tweeted the following roster moves, including the activation of Garcia.
To make room for Garcia, the White Sox placed Moises Sierra on the 15-day DL with an oblique strain. Sierra was batting .236 with two home runs and nine RBI this season and is a career .246 hitter with nine home runs and 37 RBI.

Garcia, in his third Major League season, is batting .294 with two home runs and five RBI in 34 at bats.  IN 244 at bats last season with the Tigers and White Sox, Garcia had a .283 average with seven home runs and 31 RBI.
