Yankees Injury Update: Brett Gardner and Jacoby Ellsbury out of lineup

By on 8/24/2014 12:30:00 PM

New York Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner is out of the lineup Sunday against the Chicago White Sox, reports Bryan Hoch of Fellow outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury has also been given the day off to rest, but doesn’t appear to have any specific injury:

Gardner played a full game on Saturday, but must have injured his ankle sometime during the contest. It’s unclear at this time if Gardner will be available off the bench Sunday or ready to return on Monday when the Yankees play a make-up game with the Kansas City Royals.

The 31-year-old is having one of the best seasons of his career at the plate and has been one of New York’s most valuable position players. Gardner has hit .269/.346/.435 with 15 home runs and totaled 3.4 WAR so far this year.

Ellsbury has played in all but three games this year and appears to just be resting against Chicago’s Chris Sale, who is brutal on left-handed hitting. After signing a massive seven-year deal with New York in the offseason, Ellsbury has hit .275/.340/.398 with 2.7 WAR.

Martin Prado shifted over to left field in place of Gardner, while Ichiro Suzuki started in center.  The Yankees can’t afford to lose either Ellsbury or Gardner for long, as they trail the Seattle Mariners by 3.5 games in the AL Wild Card race.
