Yankees Injury Update: Carlos Beltran returns to lineup

By on 8/23/2014 12:15:00 PM

After missing three straight games with elbow pain due to bone spurs, the New York Yankees' Carlos Beltran is back in the lineup Saturday afternoon against the Chicago White Sox. The Yankees released the lineup late Saturday morning.

Beltran has dealt with numerous ailments all season, and -- as's Bryan Hoch and Jake Kring-Schreifels note -- he received his third cortisone injection of the season Wednesday. Our own Pete Schwichtenberg reported the details. Hoch calls this latest injection "a last-ditch effort to keep Beltran active" and said that the bone spurs that have caused Beltran pain will likely need offseason surgery.

Beltran will serve as the designated hitter Saturday where he has played most of his games. The Yankees signed him to play right field and reduce Ichiro Suzuki to a role player, but injuries have limited Beltran to only 26 games in right and one game at first base.

Beltran is hitting .236/.294/.419 with 14 HR and 45 RBI in 90 games for the Yankees. The 37-year-old slugger has two more years and $30 million left on his contract, which runs through 2016.
