Yankees Injury Update: Jacoby Ellsbury out Saturday

By on 8/31/2014 08:00:00 AM

Although as I reported earlier, tests on Jacoby Ellsbury's ankle came back clean, he was unable to be in the lineup New York Yankee for Saturday night's game against the Toronto Blue Jays.
While Ellsbury seems to be upbeat about the injury, Chris Toman of is reporting that manager Joe Girardi is not so positive. Girardi said in reference to Sunday's game that he would be "shocked if he played...He was trying to gut it out, but there was no way."

Toman also reported that if the injury were earlier in the season, Ellsbury would probably have been heading to the disabled list, but with important games and the season winding down, they need his presence in the field and in the lineup.  With a day off on Monday, there is a good chance that he will sit again tomorrow and take the extra day to get back in the lineup on Tuesday.

This season, Ellsbury has a .286 batting average with 14 home runs. He has been one of the team's hottest hitters throughout August, hitting .317 with five home runs and 16 RBIs.

Getting him back is not only important if the Yankees hope to win the division, but also if they hope to earn one of the two wildcard spots as the races continue to heat up.
