Yankees Injury Update: Masahiro Tanaka to throw simulated game Thursday

By on 8/24/2014 12:00:00 PM

The New York Yankees improved to 66-61 on the season following a 5-3 win over the Chicago White Sox on Saturday. At seven games out in the division and three and a half games out in the wild card race, the Yankees remain in striking distance of a playoff spot. To make a run the rest of the way, the Yankees need a healthy roster. The good news is that pitcher Masahiro Tanaka is scheduled to take the next step in his rehab by pitching a simulated game on Thursday.

Our own Raymond Bureau reported yesterday that Tanaka, who has been recovering  from a partially-torn UCL in his right elbow, would avoid Tommy John surgery and return to the mound this season. Tanaka threw an abbreviated simulated game Saturday without any issues.

Bryan Hoch, who covers the Yankees for, tweeted the following update on Tanaka.
Tanaka, a 25-year old in his first Major League season, is 12-4 with a 2.51 ERA. In 129 1/3 innings, he's allowed only 111 hits and walked only 19, while striking out 135.
