49ers Injury Update: Vernon Davis avoids serious injury

By on 9/17/2014 11:45:00 AM

Although Vernon Davis missed the final 10 minutes of the San Francisco 49ers loss to the Chicago Bears and was seen on crutches following the game after suffering what was originally reported as a sprained ankle, an MRI revealed Davis avoided a serious injury.

As Matt Maiocco of reported:

Tight end Vernon Davis avoided a significant ankle injury and could be back on the field Sunday for the 49ers’ game against the Arizona Cardinals, a source said. Davis underwent an MRI examination on Monday that revealed a deep bruise and no structural damage to his left ankle, according to the source.
That is great news for the 49ers and Davis's fantasy owners. Matt Maiocco also reported:
The status of 49ers backup tight end Vance McDonald is not known. McDonald sustained a right knee injury on Frank Gore’s second-quarter touchdown run that was nullified due to a penalty.
Whether or not Davis plays this Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals remains to be seen. We will have to monitor his participation in practice this week and his status closer to game time. It does look like, however, he avoided a long term injury.
