Angels Injury Update: David Freese, Jered Weaver

By on 9/24/2014 02:00:00 PM

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim third baseman David Freese missed Tuesday' nights 2-0 win over the Oakland Athletics due to stiffness in his upper back, reports Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register. Fletcher adds that starting pitcher Jered Weaver has been away from the team for the past two days due to an illness:

Manager Mike Scioscia indicated that Freese will likely be available Wednesday afternoon against the Athletics, indicating his injury is not serious. Gordon Beckham started in place of Freese at third base on Tuesday night.

Freese has put together a solid bounce back season with the Angles after struggling as a member of the St. Louis Cardinals in 2013, batting .260/.321/.383 with 2.1 WAR.

Weaver remains scheduled to start on Friday against the Seattle Mariners, but Fletcher indicates that he could be pushed back. With Garrett Richards out for the season, Weaver takes over as Anaheim's nominal ace for the postseason and the Angels may want to line him up to start Game 1 of the ALDS.

The 31-year-old's numbers have declined slightly in 2014, but Weaver is still putting together a solid season with 18 wins and a 3.52 ERA (4.05 FIP).

Anaheim has already clinched the AL West, so it can afford to rest both players for the rest of the regular season if necessary.
