Angels Injury Update: Josh Hamilton not progressing

By on 9/10/2014 11:15:00 AM

The concern over Josh Hamilton's shoulder seems to be mounting as the outfielder missed his fifth straight game on Tuesday. Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reports that manager Mike Scioscia is getting worried about Hamilton's injury as his recovery stalls. Scioscia told Fletcher that he was "concerned" about the former MVP:
"If you're in a pennant race, Josh is one of those guys who would play through the discomfort, and this is something he can't play with," Scioscia said. "Naturally we're concerned."
With Hamilton's discomfort spreading from his AC joint to the surrounding muscle, it's not clear how long he will need to recover or what the precise source of the problem is. The closest he got to playing was Sunday, when he felt fine during batting practice but then felt the shoulder tighten up afterwards.

Of course, the Angels continue to crush opposition pitching without Hamilton in the lineup. They have scored 50 runs in the five games he has missed and have no reason to rush anyone back as the Athletics have dropped so far back that they have virtually no chance of catching Los Angeles for the AL West crown. At this point in time, the Angels are probably best-served taking it slow with Hamilton with the playoffs in mind.
