By on 9/12/2014 02:30:00 PM

As expected, the Oakland Athletics activated closer Sean Doolittle from the 15-day DL for Friday night's game against the Seattle Mariners, according to Jane Lee of Doolittle had been sidelined with a strained intercostal (ribcage). The A's have gone 22-29 since the All-Star Break and are ahead of the Mariners by only one game for the AL Wild Card.

A rarity among closers because he's a lefty, the 27-year-old All-Star Doolittle has saved 20 games for the A's, including the first two games of the A's-Angels series. He has also recorded five holds, three blown saves, one win and three losses, while posting a 2.28 ERA in 54 appearances. He has struck out 80, walked five (!) and allowed four homers in 55.1 innings.

Doolittle is in his third major league season, with an 8-9 career record, 2.83 ERA. He was the A's first round draft pick in 2007, and made his debut June 5, 2012. He was slow getting to the majors due to two left knee surgeries in 2009 and 2010. The A's signed Doolittle to a five-year /$10.5 million contract that takes him through 2018 with team options for 2019 and 2020.
