Blue Jays Injury Update: Dioner Navarro sits after foul tip to mask

By on 9/18/2014 11:00:00 AM

Toronto Blue Jays catcher Dioner Navarro took a seat on Wednesday after struggling with the aftereffects of a foul tip that struck his mask during Tuesday's game. Gregor Chisholm of reports that Navarro's absence was precautionary, with the catcher himself saying he was feeling fine and had just got 'fuzzy' after the latest in a series of foul tips:
"I'm feeling good," Navarro said. "I just got a little fuzzy last night after that foul tip. I think it was just an accumulation of foul tips in the head -- can never be a good thing. I felt that one last night and [manager John Gibbons] decided to give me a day off."
Chisholm writes that Navarro passed a concussion test following Tuesday's game and will get Thursday off anyway, as he does not normally catch R.A. Dickey. Josh Thole, and later George Kottaras, handled catching duties in Navarro's absence on Wednesday.

Navarro has a solid .282/.324/.410 line over 131 games this year, with 12 home runs and 22 doubles. While not quite at the level of his surprise 2013, in which he had an .856 OPS in part-time play with the Cubs, the 30-year-old seems to have figured out how to hit more consistently after several extremely poor seasons at the plate. Providing he does make it back to the team on Friday, this should be his first season of over 500 plate appearances and it also looks set to be his most valuable, with his bWAR currently sitting at a career-high 2.5.
