Braves Injury Update: Evan Gattis aiming to play Friday

By on 9/12/2014 04:00:00 PM

The Atlanta Braves are expecting catcher Evan Gattis to return to the lineup on Friday, reports Mark Bowman of

Gattis has not played since Sunday as he attempts to recover from strep throat. He joined the team on Wednesday, but did not yet have the strength to appear in the series finale against the Washington Nationals.

Once again, Gattis is putting together a strong year at the plate and has provided great power for Atlanta’s lineup. Gattis is hitting .270/.305/.507 with 22 home runs in his second year in the majors.

The Braves open a three-game road series against the Texas Rangers on Friday, so Gattis will likely DH as he continues to recover. Rookie Christian Bethancourt will likely handle catching duties on Friday and Saturday.

Atlanta will hope Gattis can boost its offense, as the Braves currently trail the Pittsburgh Pirates by two games in the race for the second NL Wild Card.
