Braves Injury Update: Jason Heyward to return by Monday

By on 9/21/2014 07:00:00 AM

The Atlanta Braves fell to the New York Mets on Saturday by the score of 4-2. The loss dropped the Braves to two games under .500 at 76-77, second in the National League East. With eight games remaining in the season, the Braves are on the brink of elimination from playoff contention. On the injury front, right fielder Jason Heyward was out of the lineup again on Saturday and might not return until Monday.

Our own Darius Austin reported on September 18 that Heyward got hit by a pitch in the sixth inning and eventually was removed from the game with a swollen left thumb.

An update on Heyward, as reported by Michael Cunningham of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Heyward was still out Saturday with a thumb injury and might not play until Monday against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Forturnately, X-rays taken after Wednesday's game on Heyward's thumb were negative.  He is currently listed as day-to-day.

Heyward, in his fourth Major League season, is batting .272 with 11 home runs and 58 RBI in 144 games. He hit just .254 in an injury-plagued 2013 in which he played in only 104 games. Heyward is a career .262 hitter with 84 home runs and 292 RBI.
