Brewers Injury Update: Matt Garza scratched from Friday start

By on 9/26/2014 10:15:00 AM

It looks as though Matt Garza's season is over after the Milwaukee Brewers scratched the right-hander from his final start with shoulder stiffness, as the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel's Tom Haudricourt tweeted:

It's not clear if Garza aggravated the problem at a particular point, but the decision no doubt has at least something to do with Milwaukee's elimination from the playoff race, which came after another disappointing loss to the Cincinnati Reds on Thursday. Although the Brewers have not officially stated that Garza won't appear again, they already have Wily Peralta and Mike Fiers scheduled to start on Saturday and Sunday respectively.

With the Brewers out of contention, they will hand another start to well-regarded youngster Jimmy Nelson, who was a top 100 prospect on both Baseball America and's lists prior to the season. Nelson was stunning at Triple-A Nashville, posting a 1.46 ERA and 0.92 WHIP over 111 innings, but has found the major leagues a little tougher in his first extended stint, his ERA jumping to 4.57 and WHIP to 1.45, although he has maintained a good K/BB ratio of almost 3. Nelson last started on September 7th but has pitched out of the bullpen twice since then.
