Buccaneers Injury Report: William Gholston, Da’Quan Bowers, Louis Murphy

A talented Tampa Bay Buccaneers defense will look to improve under head coach Lovie Smith, but will have to begin the season without a few players Week 1 against the Carolina Panthers:

Tampa Bay’s final injury report lists five players out, four of whom are on the defense. Backup defensive linemen Da’Quan Bowers (abdominal) and William Gholston (shoulder) will miss the season opener, leaving Tampa Bay a little short on depth.

The secondary is also a little banged up, as backup safety Bradley McDougald did not practice this week with a knee injury and will be out Sunday. Reserve cornerback Rashaan Melvin also missed practice with an ankle injury an won’t be able to play.

Offensively, the Buccaneers will only be missing wide receiver Louis Murphy due to a back problem. Murphy only caught six passes a year ago as a member of the New York Giants.

Running back Mike James (shoulder), cornerback Mike Jenkins (hamstring) and fullback Jovorskie Lane (hand) are all listed as probable after participating in practice in some capacity.

Tampa Bay is hoping a new coaching staff and quarterback in Josh McCown will be enough to propel the Buccaneers into the NFC South picture after a disappointing 4-12 campaign.
