Cardinals Injury Update: Andre Ellington could miss more than 6 weeks

By on 9/06/2014 08:55:00 AM

The Arizona Cardinals look like they'll be getting some unfortunate news on Andre Ellington. The running back has a foot injury, and it looks like it may hold him out for some time. It'd be a big blow to a team that appeared to be on the cusp of a great season.

Mike Jurecki reports that Ellington's time frame for how how long he's out can vary. It could be 4-6 weeks or even longer. The injury could also heal up quick and better than expected and he'd be back sooner rather than later.

There were reports that he may or may not play Monday night, though. There hasn't been a clear cut answer yet, so don't go crazy making changes to your fantasy team just yet.

The Cardinals, however, will have to make a move at running back. Jonathan Dwyer will have to start for them now. He was a decent backup for Pittsburgh last year but nothing special. And that's where this injury hurts the Cardinals. They go from having a running back who can turn plays from nothing into something, to a running back who can't do those things. That's not a knock on Dwyer, it's just that Ellington is dynamic and changes the game.

The Cardinals will have to be creative and find ways to make up for Ellington's 5.53 yards per rush. Michael Floyd will have to be a big threat in the passing game, and the defense will have to be elite. Can they do that? Sure. Will they? No clue. They have a tough test right out of the gate vs. the San Diego Chargers. It should be a good one.
