Cardinals Injury Update: Jason Motte begins rehab assignment

By on 9/01/2014 06:00:00 AM

The St. Louis Cardinals improved to 73-63 on the season following a 9-6 win over the Chicago Cubs on Sunday. With 26 games remaining, the Cardinals are just a half game out in the National League East and in good position to make a push for the playoffs. One player who may help the bullpen down the stretch is Jason Motte, who started a rehab assignment after dealing with a lower back injury for nearly a month.

Our own Nathaniel Reeves reported on August 15 that Motte,  who went to the disabled list on August 2 with a lower back sprain, was  day-to-day as to when he might resume throwing and likely wouldn't return until September.

Derrick Goold, who covers the Cardinals for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, tweeted the following update on Motte.
Motte, in his sixth Major League season, has a 4.91 ERA in 24 games.  He's allowed 25 hits and walked eight in 22 innings, while striking out 16. In 2012, Motte saved 42 games and had a 2.75 ERA in 67 games. He has a career record of 17-13 with 54 saves and an ERA of 3.03.
