Chiefs Injury Update: KC places Joe Mays on short-term IR

By on 9/03/2014 01:00:00 PM

The Kansas City Chiefs have placed linebacker Joe Mays on injured reserve-designated to return, keeping the six-year veteran out of games for at least half the season.

Mays hurt his wrist in a preseason game against the Panthers. On Thursday, August 21, the team announced the injury would require surgery. The team placed Mays on IR-DR as soon as the league allowed.

The 29-year-old was expected to be the starting inside linebacker for the Chiefs this season alongside Derrick Johnson. That job likely will go to James Michael-Johnson, who is a coverage linebacker that likely would have split time at the position with Mays anyway.

The Chiefs used the roster spot to sign free agent safety Kurt Coleman, who was cut by the Vikings last weekend. Coleman spent three seasons in Philadelphia with current Chiefs coach Andy Reid.
