Chiefs Injury Update: Mike Devito, Derrick Johnson

By on 9/09/2014 11:00:00 PM

The Kansas City Chiefs were one of the biggest surprises in the NFL last season. Heading into this season they were excepted to compete for a playoff position in a highly competitive AFC conference, after their first game of the season some are already in panic mode. Per Joel Wagler, both Mike Devito and Derrick Johnson suffered season ending torn Achilles tendons.

Losing Pro-Bowl linebacker Derrick Johnson alone is tough for an already depleted Kansas City defense, but losing Mike Devito also puts the Chiefs in a very tough position. The loss of two starters on the defensive means the Chiefs will have to plug in two second string players with limited playing experience and trying to replace a talent like Johnson will be incredibly tough.

Johnson went down untouched in the first quarter with what appeared to be an ankle injury, later in the day the news broke that Johnson suffered a torn Achilles tendon. Devito went down early in the third quarter and had to be carted off the field. As with Johnson the news came later on that he indeed did also suffer a Achilles rupture. Both players will require season ending surgery to reconstruct the ruptured tendon.

The Chiefs had a plethora of injuries on the offense and defense heading into Sunday's match-up, now they will add two more names to this list of injured players. With one of the hardest schedules in the entire league and a match-up with the Denver Broncos this weekend, the Chiefs will have to dig deep into the depth chart and hope to find replacements for both Johnson and Devito.
