Cubs Injury Alert: Starlin Castro leaves game with leg injury

By on 9/02/2014 09:00:00 PM

Chicago Cubs shortstop Starlin Castro slid into home to score on a base hit from Jorge Soler. However, as he slid, he turned his left ankle and had to leave the game. Javier Baez moved from second base to shortstop, and Logan Watkins entered to play second base and hit in Castro's spot in the batting order.

With Castro on second, Soler lined one into left field for a hit. Castro rounded third, but on his slide into home, he caught the cleats on his left foot in the dirt and turned his ankle (video). He stayed down for a full minute. Cubs manager Rick Renteria and three team trainers immediately rushed out to tend to him. Once he got up, Castro limped off the field.

The Cubs are already playing without first baseman Anthony Rizzo, who has sat out since August 27 with a back strain. Castro and Rizzo are now the veteran leaders on the team as the Cubs now play with a number of their top prospects to finish out the season and look forward to 2015. The Cubs had the second-highest win total (16) in the National League in August.
