Cubs Injury Update: Anthony Rizzo, Jorge Soler

By on 9/14/2014 02:30:00 PM

The Chicago Cubs are without two of their big boppers, but that should change when the Cubs return to Wrigley Field on Monday. The Cubs expect to open their final home stand of 2014 with outfielder Jorge Soler back in the lineup, and they could possibly have first baseman Anthony Rizzo back early in the week as well -- although his return is not guaranteed for Monday.

Anthony Rizzo

Although not definite, Rizzo could return from his lower back strain Monday or soon afterward.'s Carrie Muskat tweeted Saturday evening that Rizzo has started taking grounders at first base.
In addition, he had already started running and hitting as we noted Saturday.

In her "Muskat Ramblings" September 14 blog post, Muskat quoted Cubs manager Rick Renteria discussing the possibility of playing Rizzo Monday, but it will become more of a game-time decision. Said Renteria,
“That one I will reserve for [Monday]. We’re trying to get him out there running. I’d still look more ahead, and take anything sooner as a plus. I don’t want to put a date on [his return]. Let’s hope that sometime in the coming week we’ll see something and go from there. If it happens to be much sooner than later, good for us.”

Jorge Soler

Muskat also said that Jorge Soler will return to the Cubs' lineup Monday. Soler spent the past few days with his wife in Miami while on paternity leave as the young couple welcomed their first child into the world. He last played on September 10.

Soler is having a ridiculously great Major League debut. He has hit .356/.367/.733 with 4 HR and 13 RBI in his first 12 games since his call-up in late August.
