Cubs Injury Update: Anthony Rizzo may return this weekend

By on 9/09/2014 06:30:00 AM

The Chicago Cubs entered Monday night's game against the Toronto Blue Jays with a 64-79 record, last in the National League Central. It's been a tough season for the Cubs, who are 26th in the Major Leagues in runs scored and 18th in ERA. On the injury front, Anthony Rizzo, who has been out with a lower back problem, could return this weekend.

Our own Raymond Bureau reported on September 3 that Rizzo had an MRI on his lower back, which revealed a mild strain. Rizzo was listed as out indefinitely, which suggested he could miss the rest of the season.

Mark Gonzales, who covers the Cubs for the Chicago Tribune, tweeted the following update on Rizzo:
Rizzo, in his fourth Major League season, is batting .278 with 30 home runs and 71 RBI this season. In 425 career games with the Padres and Cubs, Rizzo has a batting average of .250 with 69 home runs and 208 RBI.
