Cubs Injury Update: Anthony Rizzo out with strained back

By on 9/02/2014 09:45:00 PM

The Chicago Cubs entered Tuesday's game against the Milwaukee Brewers with a record of 62-76, last in the National League Central. The Cubs were again without the services of Anthony Rizzo, who was out of the lineup with a strained back. At 24th in the Major Leagues in runs scored, the Cubs miss the big bat Rizzo brings to their lineup. Chris Valaika started at first base for Rizzo and hit eighth in the lineup.

Our own Raymond Bureau reported yesterday that Rizzo would sit out again Monday and would possibly need an MRI to determine the source and extent of his back problem.

Gordon Wittenmyer, who covers the Cubs for the Chicago Sun-Times, tweeted the following on Rizzo's status.
Rizzo, in his fourth Major League season, is batting .278 with 30 home runs and 71 RBI this season. In 425 career games with the Padres and Cubs, Rizzo has a batting average of .250 with 69 home runs and 208 RBI.
