Eagles Injury Update: Evan Mathis, Allen Barbre

By on 9/12/2014 09:31:00 PM

The Philadelphia Eagles have confirmed that Pro Bowl guard, Evan Mathis, was placed on the injured reserve – designated to return list. Mathis suffered a sprained MCL in Week 1 against the Jacksonville Jaguars, reports Marc Sessler of Around the NFL.

Also, the Philadelphia Eagles have lost right tackle, Allen Barbre, for the year with an ankle injury. Barbre had been filling in for suspended starting right tackle, Lane Johnson, who was suspended by the NFL for the first four weeks for violating the NFL’s drug policy.

The loss of the two offensive linemen has prompted the Philadelphia Eagles to bring in veteran and former Pro Bowl guard, Wade Smith. The 33-year-old guard has played the last four seasons at left guard for the Houston Texans.

Evan Mathis, an 11-year veteran, has been with the Philadelphia Eagles since 2011. Mathis has started every game for the past two years.

Allen Barbre, a seven-year veteran, has been with the Philadelphia Eagles since 2013, making one start.

Wade Smith, now in his 11th season, had started every game for the Houston Texans since 2010.

It remains to be seen if losing these two offensive linemen, especially Evan Mathis, will slow down Chip Kelly’s fast-paced offense. The Philadelphia Eagles square off against Andrew Luck and the Indianapolis Colts in week two.
