Falcons Injury Update: Jake Matthews exits with ankle injury

By on 9/08/2014 11:43:00 AM

The Atlanta Falcons offensive line played very well in week one, allowing just one sack en route to a victory over the New Orleans Saints. The only downside to their day was rookie left tackle Jake Matthews, the number six overall pick in the 2014 draft, left the game with an ankle injury and did not return.

According to D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, after being taken to the locker room:

Matthews returned to the bench and watched the game while sitting down. He was not in a boot nor using the aid of crutches, suggesting that he might have suffered a mild ankle sprain.

After a 2013 season where the Atlanta Falcons offensive line was one of their biggest weaknesses, an injury to Matthews would not be good. The line is expected to be much improved and performed well as a unit on Sunday afternoon. With Matt Ryan having terrific offensive weapons, if he has the time to throw the ball, the Falcons may be in line for a great redemption year after a miserable 4-12 season in 2013.
