Giants Injury Update: Odell Beckham, Geoff Schwartz

By on 9/02/2014 09:00:00 PM

After making the final cuts to the 53 man roster, the New York Giants still had more tough decisions to make. Per Kimberly Jones, the Giants will put offensive linemen Geoff Schwartz on the short term IR. Along with Schwartz, the Giants also had a tough decision with first round draft pick Odell Beckham Jr.

For Schwartz and the Giants putting him on the short term IR is not a terrible move, if anything it takes any pressure off of rushing him through the rehabilitation process and will allow him to be fully healthy for his return. The earliest Schwartz will be able to return if placed on short term IR is week 9. Schwartz has been diagnosed with a dislocated big toe, after meeting with a foot specialist last week it was determined that Schwartz will not need surgery and be assessed on a week to week basis. Schwartz was put into a walking boot for the next seven to ten days and than will be allowed to begin a rehabilitation program. The Giants are playing it safe with Schwartz, who was one of their top free agent signings. As long as his rehabilitation goes well and there are no setbacks, Schwartz should be ready for a week nine return, but that is up to the Giants medical staff to decide.

Rookie wide receiver and first round pick Odell Beckham Jr has had an injury plagued training camp. Beckham has battled a hamstring injury since camp begun and has not seen the playing field yet. For the Giants this has been frustrating at times, but hamstring injuries are nagging injuries that can take weeks to fully return from. Beckham is known for his ability to create separation and over the top speed, for him he needs healthy and strong hamstrings to showcase this talent.

Beckham has been ruled out of the Giants opener against the Detroit Lions and may not return until week two or three. The Giants were planning on having Beckham as the main punt returner this season, but due to the hamstring injury the Giants will need to assign another player for this role. Depending on how Beckham responds to treatment this week and next week a week two return is not out of the question, but we will have to wait and see.
