Indians Injury Update: Mike Aviles out with whiplash

By on 9/03/2014 12:30:00 PM

Cleveland Indians outfielder Mike Aviles was out of the lineup Tuesday night against the Detroit Tigers with symptoms related to whiplash, reports Paul Hoynes of

Aviles suffered the injury in the first inning of Monday’s loss to Detroit while diving for an Ian Kinsler triple and was removed after one at-bat after receiving a rare start in right field. Zach Walters took over for Aviles in right field on Monday and Tyler Holt started Tuesday.

Manager Terry Francona said Aviles passed concussion tests, but still “doesn’t feel great.”  There’s no indication yet if Aviles will be able to play in Wednesday’s game, but the injury sounds like it may take more than one day to heal.

Aviles has hit .245/.270/.334 in 97 games this year, mostly as a left fielder or third baseman.  Walters is also inexperienced in right field, so Holt will be the likely choice should Aviles miss another game.

Cleveland is now 5.5 games out in the AL Central race after dropping the first two to Detroit. The Indians desperately need to salvage a four-game split with the Tigers to keep their playoff aspirations alive.
